2009 Tax Year Income Tax Software

Turbo Tax for the 2009 tax year continues to properly handle the retired law enforcement officers' health insurance premium treatment as pre-tax income (see below). This deduction is contained in the part of the program relating to entering your retirement income.

I do not know if H&R Block's Tax Cut software for the 2009 tax year will support this retired law enforcement officers' benefit. Tax Cut did not support this in the 2007 and 2008 tax years and required you to manually override the program to make this claim. This, in turn, prohibited you from efiling your return.

The Pension Protection Act of 2006

Beginning in the 2007 tax year, this act allows retired special agents to treat health insurance premiums as paid from pre-tax income. See the Legislation topic in the Retiree News section for details on how to claim this (click here). Also included is current information on the income tax software you can and cannot use when claiming this benefit. Not all of them will work if you want to efile.
