August 4, 2007

H.R. 2726 has been introduced (June 2007) to slightly modify the LEOSA of 2004.

One change is to eliminate the retirement requirement for former law enforcement officers. The amendment proposes to change the requirement of having "retired in good standing" to having "departed in good standing."

There are some other changes as well.

The above amendment was not enacted. Senate bill S 1132, which contains the same amendment was introduced May 21, 2009.

The main change of interest for retirees is that retirement is good standing is proposed to be replaced by "separated" with the same qualifications and the length of service is changed from 15 years to "served as a law enforcement officer for an aggregate of 10 years or more."
