Sigmund Perry "Ziggy" Zeitlin, former OIG agent in the Northeast Region (Hyattsville) and headquarters passed away October 13, 2007. Ziggy was 85 years old and resided in Palm Springs, CA.

  • Sigmund Perry Zeitlin, 85, of Palm Springs, CA passed away Saturday, October 13, 2007 at 2:25 a.m. He was born on April 9, 1922 to William Dudley Watson and Sarah Irene Rosen in Philadelphia, PA. He married Betty Marcus on July 11, 1943 in Philadelphia, PA. Sig joined the Navy in 1939 and spent December 7, 1941 in a submarine outside Pearl Harbor and resigned from the Navy in 1946. He next enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1948 and served under General Curtis LeMay in the Strategic Air Command. When the Army and Air Force separated, he remained in the Air Force for an additional fifteen years as a Special Agent for OSI, retiring at the rank of Major. In 1964 he became a Special Agent with the Office of the Inspector General, US Department of Agriculture. After he retired from the Department of Agriculture, he and Betty settled in Palm Springs in 1984. Sig Zeitlin was a life member of the US Submarine Veterans, Life Member AFOSISA and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) serving in several officer capacities, including President of the California Chapter. His other affiliations included: B'nai B'rith, serving a term as President, The Jewish War Veterans, serving a term as President, The American Legion, and was a charter member of the Military Officers Association of America. Sig was also very active in Palm Springs civic affairs. He is survived by daughters, Diane Dinkmeyer of Denver, CO, Iris Graham of Torro de Don Miguel, Spain; son Mark Zeitlin of Mesa, AZ; and by his brother, Leonard Zeitlin of Edgewater, NJ. Sig "Tiger" Zeitlin is also survived by four grandchildren, Deborah, Henry, Stefan and Jennifer; and by five great-grandchildren, Cameron, Joseph, Sarah, Tatiana and Rafael. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Zeitlin. A pre-service reception with light lunch and viewing is scheduled for Sunday, October 21, 2007 from noon to 12:45 p.m. at Forest Lawn Mortuary, 69855 E. Ramon Rd., Cathedral City, CA. Service will be in the Ramon Chapel at 1:00 p.m. followed by a Military Honor Guard interment also at Forest Lawn. Sig requested that in lieu of flowers, for those so inclined, donations be made to the charity of individual choice or to www.BrainCandyProject.org Forest Lawn Cathedral City is in charge of arrangements.
